Product Images

We recommend you resize, optimize, and upload images to Miva so that product catalog images are at most 1500x1500 pixels and at most 200-250 kb. Miva will handle resizing your product images to smaller dimensions throughout the store to fit the various features.

Miva & Genesis Image Guides

Please use the following PDF guides for a thorough breakdown of how images should be used with Miva and with Genesis stores specifically.

Miva's ImageMachine Settings

The following sections list the maximum image dimensions that are used throughout a Miva Store. The largest image you should use for your product catalog is currently 1500x1500 pixels.

We have consolidated and normalized the image-dimensions that are used to ensure efficient disk-space usage and limit downloads for clients by setting the following image dimension groups. If you need to change the dimensions of any of the groups, then you should change them on all of the similarly-grouped pages too.

General Image Best Practices

The following sections outline some additional common image optimization techniques & best-practices.

Image Compression Tools

Individual Image Optimization

Photoshop

Use the following steps to save images from photoshop for use in an ecommerce store

  • Open an image in Photoshop
  • File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy)
  • Set the "Preset" to "JPEG High"
  • Change the "Image Size" of the longest edge (Width or Height) to be the necessary maximum size.
    • Pick a maximum size that matches your need, if there isn't a maximum, max widths/heights of around 1500 pixels are typically enough for the largest use-cases.
    • If you don't have a specific maximum size reduce the image-size until the images are at most 200-250kb per image.
Bulk Image Optimization

If you already have a set of images that have been resized to the proper dimensions, and you would like to ensure they are as small as possible, then you can run them through an image optimization tool to create a new set of images that are as small as possible.

  1. Download your images
    • To get your Miva-store product-images, Use an FTP application to download the images your store uses (ex. /httpdocs/mm5/graphics/0000001/)
      • We really only need to download the source images. Images that have been resized by Miva's Image Machine (typically ending in _[width]x[height].[extension]) do not need to be downloaded as we will regenerate them later.
  2. Run your images through an Image Optimization Tool
  3. Upload the optimized images through FTP back to /httpdocs/mm5/graphics/0000001/ with the same exact file-name.
  4. Within the Miva Admin, search for "Image Management", then click the "Check for Updated Images" button.
